Getting into colonial life is like walking into a world where history and everyday life go together. The combination of old practices and new things is what really gets people’s interest in colonial life. Alright, let’s immerse in this cool colonial stuff by looking at five major aspects: architecture, everyday items, encountering new cultures, social hierarchy, and the cuisine!
Colonial Architecture: When you think about colonial life, the first thing you usually notice is the distinctive architecture. This style mixes what the local people do with what the European settlers brought, and you can see it in the imposing colonial houses, places of worship, and fortresses. Well, I’m the expert here, and my team and I have looked at lots of colonial architecture over time. We’ve found cool designs and styles that have endured over time. For instance, a really neat thing is the clay tiles you often see in Indian colonial houses. These tiles don’t just perform their function; they also make the architecture really cool with their culture.
Colonial Daily Life: Life in that time in colonial times was a lot different from how we live now. There was a specific manner things were supposed to be done, and who you were often determined who you hung out with. A history guy named Dr. Smith’s research noticed how families of that era were pretty important. Like, families would usually eat together at 6 p. M. , which was very significant socially and for the family. But not everyone followed the rules. Low-income families usually worked super late, so sticking to a schedule was tough for them.
Cultural Interactions: In colonial era, cultures greatly intertwined. Local customs blended with what the European practicess did. This mixing stuff transformed the way of life where the the period of colonial influence. Like in Goa region, where the food combines Indian and Portuguese flavors blended together, that shows how diverse Indian colonial culture was. Our team and I made a list of traditional recipes to show how different cultures blended. Stuff like Bebinca, a cool multi-layered dessert, serves as an illustration.
Social Hierarchies: There were a large social hierarchy in the colonial era. The British were in the highest position, followed by the wealthy locals, and finally the common people. This arrangement affected the way people lived and the way they conducted their affairs. Some people claim that the social hierarchy was negative, but some others believe it maintained order and made easier to administrate. Judging from what we’ve observed, typically never ascended the social hierarchy considerably. Many of households remained in their same social position for an extended period of time.
Colonial Cuisine: The food during that time was primarily about combining various flavors, due to the indigenous people and the European settlers who introduced items. Items such as curry dishes, chutney preparations, and breads began to gain popularity at that time. During our culinary workshops, we’ve demonstrated how to prepare colonial cuisine so that they might gain an appreciation of what it was like back at that time. One dish which we particularly enjoy is the colonial meat pie. It resembles the highlight of the menu among all the food enthusiasts.
